 Building a killer cv

Let’s start with the most common queries…

How should I structure my CV

Why not take a look at our example CV template…

Should I be sending the same CV to everyone

Not necessarily… If you’re applying to a variety of different roles which require different skill sets then you can definitely tailor the experience you include in your CV.

However, if you're cold emailing or applying to a lab, don’t worry about tailoring your CV to the specific research they are doing - it’s best to present a wide skillset in this instance.

How do I know what skill set my CV should be tailored to

Great question! This can be difficult.

When applying for advertised roles, there will often be a section that describes required and desired skills. In this case, you've hit the jackpot! Take a look at your experience and see what best suits these skills so you can make it clear you tick all the boxes.

When cold emailing, it is generally best to include a variety of experience to show you have a wide skillset. Most labs are looking for someone eager to learn, passionate and someone who has clearly put themselves out there to gain as much experience as possible. For older years who have previous experience, make this very clear by delving into what you learnt from this and how you would apply your new skills to the job you’re seeking.

What do I do if I am rejected from roles because I am too young

Delete the graduation dates from your secondary/high school and do not include a graduation year from university. Many people will assume that you are in your second or third year of university if you’re cold emailing them, and may not realise until you’ve had a chance to prove yourself in an interview!

Can I still apply if I am below the age advertised for a role

You will probably be at a disadvantage if you are below the advertised age, but this doesn't mean it isn’t worth trying! Follow the advice above and see what happens!

Most labs will put an age limit since they assume those older students will have a better skillset and more experience which is better suited to the role, but you can take a chance to potentially prove them wrong!

When applying for internships, you’ve got nothing to lose (other than a small amount of time) by shooting your shot!

What can I do to boost my CV

The easiest thing is societies! Keep an eye out for committee applications which can definitely boost your CV and in general put yourself out there for as many opportunities as possible (without totally overloading yourself)
