  • PAY: £340/week

    DURATION: a minimum of 6 weeks and up to 8 weeks

    APPLICATION: submitted by the PI of the host lab on behalf of the student

    DEADLINE: in mid-March

    Requirements:

    • Must be yet to complete their first degree, usually prior to the final year of studies

    • Students undertaking an integrated MSc are eligible to apply

    • The PI of the host lab must have been a member of the BSCB for at least one year on the day of the application submission

    • Labs that had a BSCB Summer Student the year before are not eligible

    • The PI supervising the student must work in the UK or Republic of Ireland

    • There are no restrictions concerning the nationality of the student

    • Research projects must not form part of the student’s normal degree work

    Responsibilities:

    Recipients of the funding will need to submit a project report of 1-2 pages within a month of the end of the project

    Requirements:

    • Must be an undergraduate at the time of applying

    Project Limitations/Allowances:

    Allows for 4 different kinds of projects:

    1. Practical – require access to research lab infrastructure

    2. Hybrid – a combination of wet lab and remote work

    3. Remote – carried out remotely and don’t require lab infrastructure

    4. Science Communication – aim to communicate any aspect of developmental biology research to a general audience

    Also considers research projects that incorporate some aspect of outreach activities

    Responsibilities:

    Recipients of the funding will need to submit a project report under 1000 words by the end of October

  • PAY £425/week

    • Up to £750 to cover host lab expenses

    DURATION up to 8 weeks

    • This includes a place on the 2–3-day (expenses paid) Student Summer School Workshop at the University of Newcastle (only travel within the UK will be covered)

    Requirements:

    • Open to all undergraduate students, except those in their first or final year

    • Both the student and group leader (PI) must be members of The Genetics Society

    Responsibilities:

    Recipients of the funding must be able to attend the workshop in Newcastle on the 2nd-4th September

  • PROCESS:

    1. The student must contact a current or former Lister fellow - there is no limit to the number of Fellows you can contact. However, only one studentship can be accepted.

    2. Lister Fellows will be contacted directly by the Institute at the start of each year to ask if they would like to be considered for a studentship (one per Fellow.)

    PAY £3000 maximum, this full sum is obtained by doing a research project lasting at least 6 weeks but a maximum of 10 weeks

    • Funds from the Lister Institute will be paid directly to the host institution prior to the commencement of the studentship. The host institution should then pay the student according to their own policiesBEWARE! Ask the Fellow in advance about this!

    DEADLINE is at the end of May; the Fellow themselves must submit an application before this deadline. Studentships will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

    Requirements:

    • Aimed at undergraduates

    Project Limitations/Allowances:

    • The topic of the project is dependent on the work of whichever fellow  you contact for a position – choose wisely

    Responsibilities:

    A detailed report will be due upon completion of the project, typically in September

  • PAY £1500 for the student (paid directly to them)

    • Up to £500 for lab consumables for the host lab

    Requirements:

    • Must be second- or third-year students on an undergraduate programme or integrated MSc who have yet to complete their degree

    • The supervisor (PI of the host lab) must be a member of The Platelet Society

    Project Limitations/Allowances:

    • The research topic must be in the broad area of platelets and megakaryocytes

  • PAY £1500 allocated by the supervisor to the student to cover living expenses

    • Up to £500 used to cover experimental and lab expenses for a wet lab project

    APPLICATION submitted by the PI of the host lab on behalf of the student

    DEADLINE at the end of March

    Requirements:

    • Students who are in their first or final year are not eligible

    • Must be at the end of their second year of study for a 3-year degree or at the end of their second or third years for a 4-year degree. MSc students are not eligible.

    • The supervisor making the application must be a member or Fellow of the RMS

    Project Limitations/Allowances:

    • Applications (projects) must include a significant microscopy, imaging or flow cytometry component

    Responsibilities:

    Recipients of the funding will need to submit a 500-word project report at the end of their project, to be published in the RMS magazine and/or website

    Recipients will also be asked to record a 2–5-minute video about their experience for the RMS YouTube channel

  • PAY equivalent to 35 hours per week at the UK National Living Wage (£12.21 per hour from April 2025) for a total workload equivalent to 6-8 weeks

    • All applications need to be approved by the Supervisor’s Head of Department before they can be submitted. If the placement is in a lab at the same university where the student is undertaking their degree, the application must instead be approved by the student’s Head of Department.

    • Must be in the middle years of their first undergraduate degree at the time of application submission

    • Students must be members of the RSC (student membership is free)

    Project Limitations/Allowances:

    If the project is partly conducted overseas, this should only be for less than 50% of the total project duration

  • PAY £1,850 for up to 10 weeks (£185 per week)

    Requirements:

    • Final year students may apply, but the award will only support a standalone project (does not form part of their final year project/dissertation)

    • Must be an undergraduate member or at least have an application pending

    • The supervisor must have been a Society member of at least 3 years (they must be an Early Career Member in a post-doctoral position, a Full Member or Fellow)

    • Supervisors may only submit one application per year

    Responsibilities:

    Recipients of the funding must submit a report on their project, provide a personal email address and update the Society on their career progression

  • PAY £140/week (£160/week if the project is taking place in London)

    • Overseas applicants can provide justification for award of subsistence at the most appropriate of the two rates £140/week or £180/week

    • Up to £1000 is available for identified lab consumables
