The co-founder of Google DeepMind joins us to speak about their humble beginnings, their mission and achievements, and future direction in the field of AI.

Since its foundation in 2010, DeepMind has become the world leader in artificial intelligence research. By pushing the boundaries of AI, they hope to tackle some of the most urgent challenges in the real-world, from climate change to improvements in healthcare. They believe the beneficial application of AI can provide the solutions to long-existing problems and become one of the most important scientific advances to ever be made. As such, upon three years of rapid growth and numerous breakthroughs, DeepMind were recently acquired by Google in 2014.

In a unique collaboration between UCL Entrepreneurs and UCL Neuroscience Society, we are excited to be joined by Dr Shane Legg, co-founder and chief scientist of DeepMind.

After a $10,000 Canadian Singularity Institute research award for his PhD thesis and proposal of a formal definition of machine intelligence, Dr Legg studied human decision making and the algorithmic organisation of the brain at the UCL Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit. There he met Demis Hassabis, with whom he went on to co-found DeepMind Technologies.
